Where the best part about owning a winery is the people you get to meet
Lynne Majek wanted to create a place of beauty for guests to enjoy a delicious glass of wine. She worked in department store retail and then for 15 years in marketing for AT&T. While she had always been a wine lover before she got into the industry, her wine purchases were basic grocery store labels.
Sometime around 2008, she started to fall in love with Texas wine. Lynne says, “I specifically recall going to William Chris the first time, and was so impressed by the casual and non-pretentious experience. Chris was always around, tipping his cap in a gentlemanly way to the guests. I was also inspired by The Friendly Spot in San Antonio. Jody and Steve Newman have built a community with a wide open entrance that welcomes everyone.”
In 2010, Lynne worked at the AT&T headquarters in San Antonio. At that time, the company announced the headquarter offices were going to be relocated to Dallas. Over a bottle of wine, she told her husband, Randy, she thought she could learn to grow grapes. They already owned a property that would be perfect, so she enrolled in the Texas Tech Viticulture program the next year.
The Majeks planted a vineyard in 2013, opened for business the next year, and Lynne was laid off the following year. Perhaps that was a sign that the vineyard and winery were meant to be their focus!
Today, the vineyard at Majek Vineyard & Winery encompasses one and a half acres, and includes both Black Spanish and Blanc du Bois vines. The property is in the country near Schulenberg, Texas which is located off I-10, — centrally located about an hours drive from Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and Victoria. The property was originally the homestead of Randy’s family, which moved there as refugees from Czechoslovakia in 1900. In fact, Randy’s great-grandfather was a winemaker, and the couple loves that they have brought the property full circle by producing wine there.
“The best thing about owning a winery is the people,” Lynne shared.
The tasting room is open Wednesday through Sunday from noon until 6:00PM. Lynne says, “I had never imagined that guests would go through all the cycles of life here — meet here, date here, marry here, have children, lose parents and other loved ones. People visit here for all types of occasions or no occasion. I love to see the smiling faces.”
About 1,500 cases are produced annually with the Blanc Du Bois and Black Spanish rosé wines made on property from the vineyard to the bottle. Additional grapes are purchased from the Texas High Plains. Tim Drake joined as the winemaker in 2018.
Of course, COVID was a huge challenge for the small business, as it was for so many. After six months of being closed, they realized that people’s buying habits had changed.
They are still working to recover from the shutdowns. With this, they are taking steps to grow the brand by selling their wines to about 40 retailers in Central and South Texas, making it easier for their fans to pick up a bottle. They continue to add more events, from an Grown Up Easter Egg Hunt to an anniversary party. Check out the website for details on these events and more.
Majek Winery & Vineyard is now a satellite training location for Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) Wine Certification through The Texas Wine School. So, if you’ve ever thought about digging deeper to learn wine, Level 1 WSET Wine Certification Courses will be available onsite at the winery on Saturdays, April 15th, July 1st, and September 2nd. All classes will run from 9am to 6pm and students will have the option to purchase lunch at the Majek Tasting Room and enjoy views of the vineyard. The course’s exam will take place during the last hour of the class. To participate in the Level 1 WSET Wines certification courses at Majek Vineyard & Winery, visit the Texas Wine School’s website here: https://thetexaswineschool.com.
If all of this isn’t enough to keep Lynne and Randy busy, they are also adding a BnB on the property, which should be available for bookings by the end of this summer! The couple works to be good neighbors in the community and frequently sponsors local charities and driving customers to other local businesses.
