A Legacy of Passion, Sustainability, and Fine Wine
Nestled in the heart of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, Left Coast Estate stands as a testament to a multigenerational dream ignited by a love for wine and nurtured by a commitment to sustainability. Founded in 2003 by a family inspired by their experiences in Paris, where the magic of food and wine stirred their aspirations, Left Coast celebrates its 20th anniversary as a haven for exceptional wines and forward-thinking practices.
The journey to viticulture was sparked by a profound connection with Pinot Noir in the bustling bistros of Paris. This passion transcended generations, with the younger members honing their craft in the wine industry and developing a profound appreciation for the nuance and elegance of Willamette Valley Pinot Noirs.
The Left Coast team draws inspiration from esteemed wineries like Domaine Leroy and Domaine Leflaive in Burgundy, as well as revered local names such as Bergstrom, St Innocent, and Cristom Vineyards. However, their own path into winemaking was paved with a focus on grape growing and vineyard development, recognizing that exceptional wines stem from superior fruit.
Left Coast’s model is unique, embracing a future-focused ethos where ownership was vested in subsequent generations from the outset. This visionary approach allowed the family run operation to grow steadily, emphasizing sustainability and making decisions that honor the land and its inhabitants. Nearly half the estate is female-owned, showcasing a commitment to diversity and inclusivity, with a dedication to conservation evident in the allocation of 27% of the property as ecological compensation areas.
What truly defines the essence of Left Coast Estate Winery is its dedication to conservation and the profound impact it strives to create. With 490 acres of land, they’ve preserved 100 acres of old-growth oak forest, meticulously restored in collaboration with the US Department of Fish and Wildlife. This commitment extends beyond the winery’s boundaries, influencing other vineyards to value natural areas and protect biodiversity.
The most fulfilling aspect for Left Coast’s team is the opportunity to effect positive change. They take pride in nurturing their team, witnessing individuals grow into accomplished wine industry professionals. Employing a core team of 36 dedicated individuals, some having been with them since the early days, the winery celebrates their contributions and personal growth, shaping not only the winery but the entire Willamette Valley wine scene.
However, no journey is not without challenges. As farmers, they grapple with the unpredictable whims of nature, embracing each vintage’s unique character. Oregon’s climate, characterized by variability, fosters wines that balance delicately between success and challenge, echoing the beauty of their corner of the Willamette Valley.
Left Coast Estate Winery is more than a producer of fine wines; it embodies a philosophy—a commitment to stewarding the land, fostering diversity, and crafting wines that echo the essence of their terroir.
Left Coast has had several portfolio wines in retail distribution around the US for years. Now, their rarest wines are accessible through Sommly, allowing enthusiasts in several states to savor the culmination of this passion and dedication, with fine wines available for delivery to their doorstep.
